The Federal States of Germany at a glance
The Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) consists of 13 area states (Flächenländer) and 3 city-states (Stadtstaaten), Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen. Most states were built after the World War II.
In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was created with the unification of Western German States, which were previously the American, British and French territories.
In 1952, three southwestern states (Baden, Württemberg-Hohenzollern and Württemberg-Baden) merged to form Baden-Württemberg. Later in 1957, the Saarland from French territory joined the Federal Republic of Germany.
In 1990 with reunification of West Germany & East Germany, city of Berlin and the territory of the former German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic as six new states.
Baden- Württemberg
Stuttgart is the capital of Baden- Württemberg.
This state hosts Germany's richest automotive giants like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and their museums.

Lower Saxony is the second largest state in Germany.
The state's principal cities include Braunschweig (Brunswick), Lüneburg, Osnabrück, Oldenburg, Hildesheim, Wolfenbüttel, Wolfsburg and Göttingen.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Saarland

Schleswig-Holstein
Capital city of Schleswig –Holstein is Kiel.
It takes its name from the Schlei, an inlet of the Baltic sea at the end of which it sits, and "vik" or "vig" which means bay in Old Norse and Danish. Schleswig or Slesvig therefore means bay of the Schlei.

Thuringen
