What Is German Resident Permit ?

When you wish to stay in Germany for more than 90 days, then you require a Resident Permit. The purpose can be study, job seeking or any other valid reason. All citizens except the EU countries has to apply for the German Resident Permit.

Staying for longer than 90 days is not possible without the resident permit.

The basic requirement for most of the cases is the German language proficiency. The B1 language level has to be completed successfully.

Temporary Resident Permit

This is only for a shorter stay ( maybe a year ) and can be extended if there is valid reason and proof. It creates the base for the permanent stay in Germany. 

The Resident Permit can be for various reasons like

  • Study Purpose
  • Employment Purpose
  • Marriage Purpose

But once a person receives a temporary resident permit for study purpose he/she is not suppose to work with it.

When to stay in Germany for as long as you want to, you need to get the German Permanent Residence Permit. You can work in Germany as well as travel in and out of the country whenever you need.

This permit is mostly given to people after they have held the temporary residence permit for a few years or for those with the EU Blue Card. They need to prove that they have worked for at least 5 years, that their job was approved by the Federal Employment Agency, and that they have paid the necessary taxes and contributions to the government.

The German language proficiency is mandatory and you will need to know more advanced German.

When you have a permanent residence permit, your children and spouse are also eligible.

German Residence Permit Requirements

  • Valid passport from another country
  • Clean criminal record
  • German health insurance
  • Financial stability for yourself and your family
  • German Language Proficiency
  • If you work in Germany, you will need a letter from your employer with the job offer and description
  • If you study in Germany, you will need proof that you have been admitted into a university
  • If you will join your spouse in Germany, you will need proof of marriage ( marriage certificate )
